During the blackout/curfew imposed on Lusaka in the mid 70's I remember one night when we had has enough and were determined we were not going to pay much attention to it. At the time we lived on Roan Avenue in Kabulonga and on the other side of the road were close friends. Well this evening we decided that we would just nip across the road for a dinner party intending to just go back home when the evening was over. Not sure at the moment why but we took the car, probably easier to transport the kids.

The evening came to an end, probably around midnight, and we loaded up the car and proceeded to idle down the drive, no lights, intent on just crossing the road and going home.

Out of the darkness from next door came a voice who said something like "what do you think you are doing!" and it was at this point that we recalled that living in the house was one of KK's advisers, I think he had something to do with astrology, who had an armed guard that happened to be awake. I tried to explain that we were just going across the road but he would have none of it and told us he would open fire if we attempted to go out onto the road. We decided not to test him and just went back and had a few more drinks, soft of course. We had to wait until 6am before we could go home and get ready for work. Didn't try that again.
