FOREWORD

These reminiscences were sparked off by the discovery, by me, in late 2006, of the website "˜The Great North Road". This was created by a group of former Northern Rhodesians, but now including former and present Zambians as well, and they were asking for people of that time and place to share their memories, either in story form to include in their Boma Archive section, or photographs to show a pictorial record of those days. I have done a bit of both with this semi -autobiographical account of the origins and development of the country's Fire Services, particularly the Civil Aviation one, from which all others sprung.
