William (Bill) Gardner - Nkana Kitwe
Written by Jack Gardner
It is with a sincere sence of lost that I have to report the death of William (Bill) Gardner who lived and worked in Zambia from 1955 to 1980's.  Bll worked at Nkana mine from 1957 until he retired and finished up as clerk of works at Central shaft.  He was a Freemason and a Past Master of Lodge Nkana. He lived at 108 Geddes Street and finally at Rhokana Flats.  He always talked about the good old days in Northern Rhodesia and working with the Nkana Corporation.  I was with him in his final hours and can say that his passing was quick in the company of his family.  He constantly talked about the good times and the good friends he made when he was there.  Until 18 months ago he still palyed golf with his son and grandsons but due to failing eyesight he always took 8 foot from the hole as a single "give me".  He had a full family life enjoying time with his grandsons, grandaughter and greatgrandchildren.  Towards the end  life became less and enjoyable and the extract from the Bible - Ecclesiastes -where it says we have no pleasure in them well William had reached that stage................................he will be sorely missed at our dinner table every sunday and we will take a "wee nip" with his favourite .."here's to us. Wha like us, Gey  few and their aw deid.
